The Governor of Cross River state, Ben Ayade has commenced the payment of December salaries to workers in its workforce.
The government in a statement in Calabar Yesterday, November 30, by the senior special assistant to the governor on media, Christian Ita, said the governor’s decision is to enable workers make early purchases before the hike in food prices which usually accompanies the December periods, Leadership reports.
The statement read in part: “His Excellency, Professor Ben Ayade believes that paying December salaries early will help workers shop for Christmas before the usual hike in prices during Christmas.”
“Although the last time the state got federal allocation was way back in October, the workers-friendly governor decided to pay December salaries early as a show of his underlying love for the workers.
The governors met with the president on Monday, November 27, at the Presidential Villa where he approved the payment of the Paris Club fund.
Vanguard reports that the governors in a statement signed by Abulrazque Barkindo, head, media and public Affairs, said: “No mention of all workers arrears, was ever made, by President Muhammadu Buhari.
In another report, a 47-year-old man, Abdullahi Uye Zhiya, from Oguma in Bassa local government area of Kogi state has taken his own life allegedly over non-payment of 12 months salaries in the state.
Zhiya reportedly killed himself after lamenting bitterly to a friend that he can no longer afford to take care of his wife and children due to the 12 months salaries owed by the state government.
The Sun newspaper reports that Zhiya, the chief store officer at the state Universal Basic Education, Oguma, who was said to have killed himself early this week did not leave a suic*de note, before drinking a liquid substance suspected to be poisonous chemical. Read more:
