Herdsmen attacks: Nigerian senators visit Benue on fact-finding mission

The Senate ad hoc committee on security is currently in Benue state on a fact-finding mission over the killings and destruction by herdsmen in the state.
The visit is as a result of a directive from Senate president, Bukola Saraki, for members of the committee to immediately resume sitting and work through the weekend to ensure they have an interim report ready for the consideration of senators by next week.

A member of the committee, Senator Biodun Olujimi (Ekiti-South), told Punch newspapers on on Friday, January 12 that she was already in Benue state together with other members of the panel.

She disclosed that the panel was billed to meet with Governor Samuel Ortom, thTor Tiv, security agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders on the matter today, Saturday, January 13.

Her words: “We are already in Benue state (as of 7pm on Friday), we just arrived here. We are going to meet the people of Benue, we are going to meet the governor, we are going to meet the local government chairmen and the Tor Tiv, at least to have a first-hand information so that we can have an interim report ready for the Senate on Tuesday.”

Saraki, while responding to the situation in Benue state, maintained that the killings were clear indications that the security architecture in the country had “inherent faults and needs to be refurbished.”

Meanwhile, Governor Samuel Ortom has described the victims of the recent attack as fallen heroes of Benue state.

He also revealed that the state has lost 73 people to the attacks since the beginning of the new year. “This figure does not include our security operatives who have also fallen at the hands of these enemies of peace.

“It does not even include those already buried in their communities. Some of these gallant patriots who survived gun and machete attacks are receiving medical attention,”
