Why I May Not Complete My Tenure As President – Buhari Shocks Nigerians

Why I May Not Complete My Tenure As President – Buhari Shocks Nigerians
Tired, fed up and overwhelmed, over the looming social crisis rearing up its ugly head as a result of millions of People displaced by Boko Haram, President Muhammadu, on Tuesday, November 29, subtly raised doubts, over the ‘possibility of him completing his four-year term.’
Buhari made this shocking disclosure at a meeting he had with the world leader of the Tijjaniya Islamic Movement, Sheikh Sharif Ibn Mohammad, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
This is coming, few weeks after the President said publicly that he contemplated running away from office, shortly after he was inaugurated as Nigeria’s President on May 29, 2015.
Buhari had said the on-going economic crisis has made him feel as though he is suffering the consequences of someone else’s transgressions.
Political analysts have explained that Buhari’s latest statement might be connected to the stress he is passing through at the Presidential Villa.
According to a statement issued by the Presidents Spokesman, Garba Shehu, Buhari on Tuesday, lamented the destruction of public institutions in the North-East by Boko Haram terrorists.
“Government is faced with the problem of repairing schools, health centres and whole towns. We must repair their schools and recruit teachers otherwise they will become tomorrow’s Boko Haram,” Buhari warned.
“The President reiterated the importance of justice in the affairs of governance, emphasising that men and women in authority must show kindness and justice to all the people under them.
“In commending the religious group for the prayers they had rendered for three days in Yola, Adamawa State for the recovery of the economy and peace in the country, the President said that the problem Oil production was experiencing in the country and in the global market had forced the imperative of agriculture on Nigerians.
“We are learning the hard way. The mistake we made was to abandon agriculture. We came at a time of difficulty the country has never experienced since the Civil War,” he said.
Buhari also requested religious leaders to persuade Nigerians to embrace hard work, endurance and patience.
He assured Nigerians that his administration would not relent in the effort to achieve self-reliance and security for the nation.

NCC suspends data tariff hike

— 30th November 2016

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has suspended move to prompt big mobile operators to effect a new tariff regime for data services.
The new tariff regime is suppose to take off on December 1, 2016, but there had been a public outcry against it.
A statement, signed by Tony Ojobo, NCC director of public affairs said: “Following the concerns that visited the directive to introduce price floor for data segment of the telecommunications sector beginning from December 1, 2016, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has suspended any further action in that direction.
“The decision to suspend this directive was taken after due consultation with industry stakeholders and the general complaints by Consumers across the country.
“The Commission has weighed all of this and consequently asked all operators to maintain the status quo until the conclusion of study to determine retail prices for broadband and data services in Nigeria.
“Recall that the Commission wrote to the Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) on November 1, 2016 on the determination of an interim price floor for data services after the stakeholder’s consultative meeting of October 19, 2016.
“The decision to have a price floor was primarily to promote a level playing field for all operators in the industry, encourage small operators and new entrants.
“The price floor in 2014 was N3.11k/MB but was removed in 2015. The price floor that was supposed to flag off on December 1, 2016 was N0.90k/MB.
“In taking that decision, the smaller operators were exempted from the new price regime, by virtue of their small market share. The decision on the price floor was taken in order to protect the consumers who are at the receiving end and save the smaller operators from predatory services that are likely to suffocate them and push them into extinction.
“The price floor is not an increase in price but a regulatory safeguard put in place by the telecommunications regulator to check anti-competitive practices by dominant operators.
“This statement clarifies the insinuation in some quarters that the regulator has fixed prices for data services. This is not true because the NCC does not fix prices but provides regulatory guidelines to protect the consumers, deepen investments and safeguard the industry from imminent collapse.

The NCC’s decision comes a few hours after the Senate ordered a stop to the planned increase.

Ebonyi begins seizure of foreign rice

Clement Nnachi, Abakaliki

The Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, has set up a taskforce to move into various markets and confiscate foreign rice.

Umahi announced the setting up of the committee on Monday in Abakaliki, the state capital, during a ceremony to commence the construction of an ultra modern Kpirikpiri market in the capital city.

The governor said, “We have set up a taskforce and directed them to confiscate foreign rice found in our markets, the person should give us the certificate of the quality of the rice and has to provide the import duties paid for it, where he brought it from and give us Standards Organisation of Nigeria certificate to prove that the rice is not poisonous.”

Umahi said that some foreign rice were poisonous, insisting that some of them were stored for more than 20 years abroad before they were smuggled into the country.

“That is why we have cases of cancer, cases of kidney failure and all kinds of diseases that our people were not known for; so you are taking risk if you are selling foreign rice in the land of Ebonyi,” he cautioned.

Pandemonium as lawmaker’s aide slumps, dies at NASS

From Fred Itua, Abuja

There was pandemonium at the National Assembly following the sudden collapse and death of a yet-to-be identified Senior Legislative Aide (SLA) of one of the lawmakers, at about 12 noon, yesterday.
A witness, who doesn’t want to be named, said the man died inside a private car conveying him to the National Assembly complex. He said the late aide’s son was conveying him to the complex when he suddenly collapsed inside the vehicle and died before he could be rushed into an ambulance stationed behind the White House of the National Assembly.
It was, however, learnt that the deceased was from Zamfara State and was an aide to a member of the House of Representatives.
One of the Sergeant-At-Arms in the National Assembly told Daily Sun that the deceased battled with ill-health for about one week and visited a clinic inside the complex.
The security officer said the deceased “came to the complex, yesterday, to get a permit from the clinic so he could get proper medical attention in another hospital, elsewhere.”
The nature of his sickness could not be ascertained but one of the security guards said he suffered from a heart-related ailment.
An unnamed member of the House of Representatives, who was earlier though to be his principal, denied any relationship with him when newsmen contacted him for his reaction. The National Assembly management was yet to officially react to the incident at the time of filing this report.

Film-maker, Seun Egbegbe, arraigned for stealing nine iPhones

November 25, 2016

Seun Egbegbe

Afeez Hanafi

The embattled film-maker, Oluwaseun Olasunkami (aka Seun Egbegbe), who was accused of stealing nine iPhones at a shop in the Computer Village, Lagos, was brought before an Ikeja Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

He was arraigned on one count of stealing before a Chief Magistrate, Mrs. Y.O. Aje-Afunwa

The police said the offence, which was allegedly committed at Kaaltex Innovation Consultancy in Ikeja, contravened Section 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State.

A mob had beaten up Egbegbe on Tuesday after he allegedly tried to escape in a jeep with the iPhones.

PUNCH Metro had reported that after signifying his intention to buy the phones, the film-maker, reportedly told a sales boy in the shop that he wanted to pick money from his vehicle outside.

He allegedly attempted to escape with the phones in the waiting jeep, which reportedly conveyed three other persons, when the sales boy raised the alarm.

He was subsequently apprehended, beaten up and handed over to the police and detained at the Area F Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

Egbegbe had told the police that he wanted to pick the money from his vehicle when the sales boy screamed and alerted the mob.

However, in a statement on Wednesday, which was credited to Egbegbe, he stated that he was neither arrested nor beaten by any mob.

“The story is pretty laughable and better left in the court of public opinion. Ordinarily, I do not want to join issues with the writer of the publication, but I have a responsibility to set the records straight for my fans, friends and foes, in the defence of the truth.

“To say the least, the news did not only grossly misinformed unsuspecting public; it also portrays traces of campaign of calumny by some mercenary bent on destroying my name, for reasons best known to them.

“I want to state here categorically and emphatically that though I was at Computer Village to address some issues, I was never arrested for stealing 10 iphone 7s, as stated by the writer of the story; the matter has since been resolved by the police; and the issue of me stealing phone is devilish from the said writer.

“It is germane to note that I am a charitable, humane, and grass root person, who has exhibited selflessness in communal service, which is a veritable tool for social development.

“Finally, I wish to inform the general public to discard the report. I am presently at home relaxing,” the statement had read.

However, a few hours after the statement went viral, a police source at the command told our correspondent that the suspect was still in custody, adding that the state Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, visited the Area F Command and was briefed on the case.

The police, in the charge preferred against Egbegbe on Thursday, stated that the stolen iPhones were worth N2.4m.

The charge read, “That you, Oluwaseun Olasunkami, on November 22, 2016, at about 9am, at 9, Simbiat Abiola Way, Ikeja, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did steal nine iPhone 6s, valued at N2,400,000, property of one Kaaltex Innovation Consutancy, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 278 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.”

The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge and elected summary trial.

The presiding magistrate, Aje-Afunwa, admitted him to bail in the sum of N1m with two responsible sureties in like sum.

The magistrate added that the sureties must present evidence of tax clearance and their residential addresses to the court for verification.

The case was adjourned till February 8, 2017, for mention.

Biafrans Gain Recognition And Freedom In Turkey As Nigerians Are Now Deported From The Country On A Daily Basis

Currently, there is good news for Biafrans emanating from Turkey, the Asian country beside the Aegean Sea. It is the news that officials of Turkey now leave Biafrans alone as they deport Nigerians from their country.
This situation came about few days ago when Coordinator of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the country, who did not want his name in print, approached Turkey officials on the matter deportation of Biafrans alongside Nigerians. There, he explained to them that the status of Biafrans were different from that of Nigerians, being stateless persons that were not happy being called Nigerians.
The Coordinator, who is a prominent and influential individual in the area of the country he was residing, convinced the Turkey officials that their land (Biafraland) has been under occupation by Nigeria by force of arms since 1970. He therefore informed them that it would be unfair and unjust to punish Biafrans alongside Nigerians for atrocities committed by evil Nigerian government and its functionaries.
After all the information were shared; after realizing that Biafrans were different from Nigerians; and after learning that Biafrans were seriously working to exit from Nigeria, the Turkey officials have since decided to no longer deport Biafrans as Nigerians.
Interestingly, as Nigerians in Turkey observed what was going on, they have started claiming to be Biafrans. Every time anyone of them runs fowl of the law, (especially when orders for their deportation are given) they claim to be Biafrans and not Nigerians.
Turkish officials, having realized this, resorted to having the Biafran Coordinator clear anyone that claims to be Biafran. The Coordinator has been doing this by having every one of them to speak any Biafran language they know. Furthermore, he has been advised to give Biafran Identity Card to Biafrans to stop impersonators.
Trouble started for the Nigerians when it was discovered that their President, Muhammadu Buhari, played prominent roles in the failed coup d’état of July 15 in Turkey. Buhari was discovered to have transferred funds to the coupists from a Nigerian bank, as well as helped with logistics and planning of the coup.
As a result of Buhari’s culpability, President of Turkey, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was livid with rage when he found out. He then gave instructions for all Nigerians to be deported back to their accursed land. That has been going on for quite sometimes, even with Biafrans being deported alongside until IPOB leadership decided to meet with Turkish officials and set the record straight.
This is the situation and the good news that is making many Biafrans in Turkey move around with their heads held high. Nigerians. Many Nigerians who could not speak a Biafran language were deported.

Strike: ASUU hails members’ resilience

Lagos – The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on Tuesday hailed the resilience of its members in the struggle to re-position the nation’s university system as it concludes a one-week warning strike. The union’s National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, gave the commendation in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.
The union last week, declared a national warning strike to press home their long standing demands from the Federal Government. The lecturers under the aegis of ASUU began the strike in all university branches on Nov. 16. The union listed its demands to include Federal Government’s refusal to honour its 2009 agreement and the denial of staff entitlement in respect of earned academic allowance, amounting to N128 billion. Other demands are poor funding of universities for revitalisation and refusal to register the Nigerian Universities Pension Management Company. According to Ogunyemi, members had ensured total compliance of the strike while it lasted in all the universities. “I am very happy with the level of compliance shown by members. “I had good reports concerning the strike from the various zones and branches. “Thus, it goes to show the commitment that our members are putting in place to achieve global competitiveness for Nigerian universities. “The strike will be over today and we have directed that academic activities should resume,’’ the president said. He said that negotiations were ongoing with a committee put in place by the Senate to look into the issues listed by the union. “Yesterday, we commenced talks with the committee to deliberate on the various issues on ground. “The meeting had in attendance representatives from the Ministries of education, budget, finance, labour and representatives of the committee on tertiary institutions, TETfund and others. “The deliberation was fruitful as we all had good approaches on the issues. “For now, we can call this development as work in progress. “We shall update our members on all that transpired because we are a democratic group,’’ Ogunyemi said. According to the unionist, the outcome of the meeting will be reviewed by members. Ogunyemi added that if they were satisfied with it, a congress would be called to give a common verdict. “It is not in the place for the executive committee members to unilaterally take decisions concerning the issue. “Members will be the ones to know the next line of action to take in respect of the understanding that the executive reached with the government. “If members are satisfied with the outcome of the meeting, then there will be no need for further agitation. “All we are saying is for government to always try to keep its own side of the bargain so that our members can keep fate in them,’’ he said.

ASUU: Indefinite strike imminent

As a week nationwide warning strike by university lecturers ends on Tuesday, the teachers are threatening to go on an indefinite strike if their demands are not met.
Dr Ifeanyi Abada, the Chairman of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) Chapter of the Academic staff Union of Universities (ASUU), made this known on Tuesday in Nsukka, Enugu State.
ASUU was left with no option than to proceed on the one-week warning strike; failure to meet our demands, we will go on an indefinite strike, Abada told newsmen. He said that the chapter complied fully with the warning strike directive. “The National Executive Committee (NEC) made efforts to resolve this issue with the government but government remained unyielding. “The strike compliance in UNN is total, no lectures, no examinations, no departmental and faculty meetings, as members will not participate. “UNN chapter will not renege on the directive of the national body until government addresses all the issues raised. “Our monitoring team is moving round; any lecturer found teaching will be sanctioned accordingly,’’ he said. According to Abada, among the demands of ASUU is that universities be exempted from the Treasury Single Account (TSA) policy. He noted that ASUU was also demanding Federal Government implementation of an agreement it entered into with ASUU in 2009. Miss Amarachi Okafor, a student of the UNN’s Department of Psychology, urged the government to meet ASUU’s demands to avoid an indefinite strike. “I urge ASUU to consider the plight of students, who will be spending extra years as well as their parents who have been sponsoring them,” she added. Another student, Mr Emma Ochi of the Department of Mass Communication, pleaded with ASUU to consider the interest of students and avoid an indefinite strike. “I want Federal Government and ASUU to resolve their misunderstanding amicably in the interest of students and tertiary education in this country,’’ he said. Meanwhile, academic activities are still paralysed in the university as a result of the warning strike.

Again, Senate/ASUU meeting ends in deadlock

…As ASUU consults stakeholders to prevail on FG
By Henry Umoru & Dayo Adesulu
ABUJA —SIX days after a meeting between the Senate and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU ended in stalemate, another interface between both parties again ended in deadlock yesterday.
At the end of the eight hours meeting which ended 8.32 pm last night, there was no concrete agreement between the university lecturers and the lawmakers.
Addressing journalists after the meeting, Chairman, Senate Committee on Tertiary Education, Senator Jibrin Barau, APC, Kano North, said  both parties agreed with some of the issues raised, except one that had to do with their earned allowances, adding that they (ASUU) were going to make consultations with their members on the way forward.
Barau said: “You can see we have spent about 8 hours in this very important meeting. We have deliberated and thank God we have dealt with all the issues and we have agreed in all the issues except one.
“We have adjourned to make consultations, every sections of the meeting will get back to his constituency and report to it what transpired. At a later that we will reconvene to thrash out the remaining issues.
“Is about the earned allowances that need to be paid the university lecturers, the government due to the paucity of funds proposed certain amount of money but ASUU thought otherwise that the money was quite inadequate but he’s going back to his members to report to them and make consultations and later get back to us.
“But we do hope they come up with good news that they have accepted the government offers”
Efforts to speak to ASUU to get their own side of the story proved abortive as the president refused to speak with journalists.
Meanwhile, ASUU yesterday said meetings and consultations were ongoing to ensure that government did the needful.
Speaking with Vanguard yesterday, ASUU-UNILAG Chairman, Dr Laja Odukoya, said the one week warning strike of ASUU was still on, adding that there was possible of an indefinite strike should government fail to do the needful.

6 killed in Maiduguri multiple explosions

From TIMOTHY OLANREWAJU, Maiduguri

Multiple bomb explosions in Maiduguri, yesterday claimed the lives of two civilian JTF members while four of the suicide bombers were also killed.

The two CJTF paid the supreme price while preventing a Boko Haram bomber from entering the city through the Maiduguri-Dikwa road city gate, South-east of the capital, to detonate his explosive devices, the police said.

“A suicide bomber attempted to enter the city through the Maiduguri-Dikwa road city gate but was prevented by the Civilian JTF in the area. The bomber exploded killing two Civilian JTF members,” Commissioner of Police, Borno Command, Damiah Chukwu told newsmen at a press conference.

The bomb attack came in the wake of another suicide attack which occurred earlier in the day around the Jiddari-Polo, Southwest of the metropolis in the early hours of the day. Residents said they heard heavy sounds from the explosion, fueling anxiety of possible attack on the capital by Boko Haram but the police commissioner said the sounds were explosions from suicide bombers.

“We have a numbers of explosions today (Friday) in the city. At about 4.05am, two suicide bombers; a male and female were attempting to detonate explosive devices. One of the bombers was very close to the mobile policemen sandbag around the Federal High Court area and decided to unstrap her IEDs vest from her body but the male grabbed the vest and in the process, exploded, killing only the male bomber. Our men promptly arrested the lady who confessed that she was abducted by Boko Haram during attack on Gwoza (Borno hilly town captured by Boko Haram in September 2014).

She said she has been with Boko Haram since then until Thursday night when they prepared her for suicide attack,” the CP explained.

He said another the surviving bomber has been handed over to the military for further investigation after the preliminary interrogation by the police. He also said another suicide bombers targeting the Muna Garage blew themselves up after they were intercepted and prevented from entry the garage also in the early hours of Friday.

“Six people including two Civilian JTF and four suicide bombers died today in the multiple explosions-2 bombers at Jiddari-Polo, 2 bombers near Muna Garage along Maiduguri-Gamboru Ngala road and the Civilian JTF,” Chukwu explained.

He also warned against planned demonstration by “Shiite group or any unauthorized group or groups” in the state, saying the police and other security agencies were prepared to forestall breakdown of law and other. He urged residents to be more vigilant.

Dasuki, ex-Sultan of Sokoto, dies at 93

FORMER Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Ibrahim Dasuki, is dead. He died yesterday and will be buried today, according to Muslim rites.

The late Sultan Dasuki,  father of ex-National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was deposed in 1996 by the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, after he was installed by Military President, General Ibrahim Babangida, in 1988.  He was on the throne for eight years before his deposition and banishment to Zing, in Taraba State.

Dasuki was the first Sultan from the Buhari line of the House of Dan Fodio. He was a close associate of Ahmadu Bello and held the traditional title of Baraden Sokoto before becoming Sultan.

The late Sultan attended Dogondaji Elementary School before proceeding to Sokoto Middle School in 1935. He finished his secondary education at Barewa College on sponsorship from Sokoto Native Authority.

After finishing high school in 1943, he worked as a clerk in the treasury office of the Sokoto Native Authority. In 1945, he took up appointment with Gaskiya Corporation, a publishing house that published the Hausa daily, Gaskiya Ta Fi Kwabo.

He joined the civil service as an executive officer and later became private secretary to Ahmadu Bello. In 1957, he filled the position of regional executive council deputy secretary and was sent to Jeddah as Nigeria’s pilgrimage officer.

Between 1960 and 1961, Dasuki worked in the Nigerian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan and was later brought back to Nigeria by Ahmadu Bello to work  in Jos, following which he became the permanent secretary in the regional Ministry of Local Government.

Responding, Senator Suleiman Hunkuyi, said “across the board, most agencies we have gone to, we find that capital releases has been phenomenal in comparison to the last sixteen years. I stand to be corrected on this.”

Senator Hunkuyi said, “there are explanations that should come from here, and additional explanations from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation. We need this information to be able to understand what is going on.

“This committee is duty bound to investigated and define the nature of the problem with a view to finding solutions to these poblems, if indeed there are.”

The lawmaker who represents Kaduna North senatorial district in the National Assembly, while commending NAHCON’s chairman for his achievements so far, also requested the commission to come up with strong arguments to justify it’s request for increased funding.

“It is commendable that despite the releases made to the commission, you have been able to utilize what was given in such a way that you achieved so much. Therefore, asking for more funding would raise concerns as to why you are making such a request since you. We’re able to realise so much with little. However, I think if the commission wants more funding, it has to come up with strong explanations to back its demands,” Hunkuyi said.

In his response to queries raised by Senators over zero allocation for the commission, the Chairman of the commission, explained to the committee that all attempt to have the Finance ministry to allocate funds for capital projects failed.

Mukhtar, who disclosed that the commission had proposed N500 million for capital expenditure in the 2016 budget, explained that a mixture occurred which led to said sum being shifted to NAHCOM’s offshore expenditure profile.

The development, he added, made it impossible for the funds to be assessed, a position which the budget office stated was beyond its powers to revisit.

He recalled that NAHCON approached the relevant senate and house committees charged with oversight of the commission to intervene in the matter, but was still unable to get the approval of the finance ministry for capital allocation.

He therefore called on the Senate to give its support by way of input in the 2017 budget, needed to enhance NAHCON’s performance to be at par with international standards.

On his path, Chairman, Senate Committee on Federal Character, Senator Tijjani Kaura (APC, Zamfara North), said that the reason for the panel’s oversight visit to the commission was for it to be briefed on the implementation of the 2016 budget.

The lawmaker who assured of the National Assembly’s readiness to assist the efforts of the commission through legislation, added that same would in no small measure enhance the performance of the commission’s operations.

National assembly orders arrest of MMM promoters

– Lawmakers say MMM scheme promoters are fraudsters exploiting Nigeria’s current poor economic condition to defraud them
– The House of Reps members say all those promoting MMM should be promptly arrested by law enforcement agencies across Nigeria
MMM Nigeria
The House of Representatives has ordered all law enforcement agencies to start arresting those promoting the MMM Ponzi scheme.
The lower house of legislature on Wednesday, November 9 agreed that the scheme meant trouble for Nigerians and should therefore be stopped. Anybody found promoting would be treated as a criminal and arrested by security agencies.
The legislators moved the motion as a matter of urgent national importance after discovering members of a syndicate who conduct seminars to train people on how to invest in the business.
The motion was raised by Akinlade Fijabi from Oyo State, who described MMM as a ‘Rob Peter to Pay Paul Scheme’ which is exploiting the economic situation of Nigerians that had left them desperate for income through any means without considering the implications.
Another lawmaker from Ondo State, Bode Ayorinde said: “When the business goes burst, it is the same House that people will flood with petitions.”
Enugu lawmaker Dennis Amadi said the House should protect Nigerians because the collapse of MMM could make many commit suicide.
“The House will not wait until these crooks defraud Nigerians of billions of naira or until people start committing suicide,” he said.

Speaking during a mentoring program for students of Government Secondary School, Suleja, the head of the consumer protection department of the CBN Kadija Kassim said the activities of the scheme is not regulated by any institution.

Shocker: TB Joshua fails in his prophecy on US election. See what he said

Before the US presidential election held yesterday, Prophet TB Joshua gave a prophecy on who would win. However, the reverse is the case as his prophecy seems not to be true. What do you have to say?

Donald Trump wins presidential election, plunging US into uncertain future

Donald Trump shattered expectations on Tuesday with an election night victory that revealed deep anti-establishment anger among American voters and set the world on a journey into the political unknown.
The Republican nominee has achieved one of the most improbable political victories in modern US history, despite a series of controversies that would easily have destroyed other candidacies, extreme policies that have drawn criticism from both sides of the aisle, a record of racist and sexist behaviour, and a lack of conventional political experience.
After surprise early victories in Florida, North Carolina and Ohio, it fell to the Rust Belt states of the industrial midwest to determine the result of his stunning upset.
Wisconsin and Michigan, two states hit hard by a decline in manufacturing jobs and lost by Hillary Clinton to Bernie Sanders in the Democratic primary, were led by Trump as the race headed for an early morning cliffhanger.
A 2.30am, the Associated Press projected Trump had won Wisconsin and called the overall race for Trump, who passed the 270 electoral college votes he needed to secure the presidency.
Shortly afterwards, CNN and NBC reported that Clinton had called Donald Trump to concede but would not be making a public address.
Trump left Trump Tower for the short journey to the Hilton Midtown, where the president elect then took to the stage and insisted he would “deal fairly with everyone”.
“Sorry to keep you waiting, complicated business, complicated business,” began Trump to raucous chants of “U-S-A, U-S-A” from his excited supporters.
“I have just received a call from secretary Clinton She congratulated us – it’s about us and our victory – and I congratulated her on a very hard fought campaign.
“Now it is time for Americans to bind the wounds of division,” he added. “It is time for us to become together as one united people … I pledge to every citizen of our land that I will be president for all Americans.”
Earlier, Democratic campaign chairman John Podesta appeared before distraught supporters to announce that she would not be appearing to give a concession speech. “Everybody should head home,” he told them, “Get some sleep. We’ll have more to say tomorrow.
“It’s been a long night and a long campaign,” he added. “We can wait a little longer, can’t we? They are still counting votes and every vote counts, several states are too close to call so we are not going to have anything more to say tonight.”
“This is a historic night,” said the vice-president-elect, Mike Pence, in the first official Republican response. “The American people have spoken and the American people have elected their new champion.”
Republicans have also secured majorities in the House of Representatives, the Senate and will probably get to reappoint a fifth Republican nominee to the supreme court – potentially leaving the new president with few checks and balances.
Investors reeled from the prospect of a victory that would reverberate around the world and futures markets pointed to a fall of nearly 600 points in the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
As results started to come in, two candidates with very different views of America were watching television just two minutes’ walk from each other: the Clintons at the Peninsula Hotel in midtown Manhattan and the Republican team in Trump Tower.
But the mood in the Trump camp shifted early after signs of a strong performance in Florida and Clinton supporters began contemplating the consequences of a result few thought was possible.

TRUMP IS WINNING ACCORDING TO FOX NEWS

According to an update to the scorecard released Monday, Clinton can still get to the necessary 270 electoral votes by winning all the states rated “solid” or “leaning” Democratic.
But just barely. Doing so would get Clinton to 274.
Trump is looking at a narrow – but expanding – path to 270, and he could win by snatching up the toss-ups and flipping at least one state currently seen as leaning toward Clinton.
The following updates were made Monday morning to the Fox News Decision Team’s ratings for key battlegrounds:
1. Arizona changes from “toss up” to “lean Republican”
2. Iowa changes from “toss up” to “lean Republican”
3. Nevada changes from “toss up” to “lean Democrat”
4. North Carolina changes from “lean Democrat” to “toss up”
5. Utah changes from “toss up” to “lean Republican”
Can you say, “President Trump?”
Might want to start getting used to it.Because
TRUMP IS WINNING!!!
For the next four years, it’s looking very likely that The Donald will be the leader of the free world.
However, the map does show Clinton at 182 solid electorals with 92 leaning Dem. That’s 274, so…

Breaking: Ecowas court Adjourns Nnamdi Kanu's Case to February 9th 2017 As FG's Defense counsel fumbles again

ABUJA--At exactly 12pm, after hearing of the first case, the suit filed against the Nigerian government was called upon for hearing. The FG defence counsel filed an additional case charges against Nnamdi Kanu, but the presiding judges blasted the government's defence team saying, “this is not the rule of law.” The judges, there after called upon Kanu’s legal representative led by Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor while ignoring the FG's team.
Kanu's legal counsel, Barrister Ejiofor, objected the Federal government's application in filing for additional charges on the grounds that the original charges has not been settled and disposed off.
Ejiofor narrated to the panel of judges, how the Nigerian government have been delaying the his client's trial by the introduction of judicial gimmicks to keep Kanu in unlawful detention, adding that that is what they came to achieve today in court by the addition of fresh charges against his client.
When called upon for his defence, the FG's counsel delayed for some minutes before insisting that fresh charges needed to be included in the case.
The ECOWAS court once again reiterated that his prayer for fresh charges did not have grounds in the existing constitution.
On Barrister Ejiofor’s further objection, the regional court told him to note all the errors and present it after the FG legal representative must have been through with his submissions.
There appears to be a moment of drama and mocking of the Federal government's defense team when the ECOWAS judges asked them to explain the rationale behind their absence at the last court sitting of October 5th, but they still could not give a valid reason or excuse which left the court attendees and the entire room laughing out loud as the judges again strongly blasted the government's legal representatives describing it as a “silly excuse.”
Bereft of any further issues to present to the court, the FG defence counsels, all seated down in shame as speechlessness enveloped them.
The Nigerian government defence counsel strongly wanted the additional charges to be hurriedly added this same day hearing is held, they tried forcing the new charges’ files at the court when the court has not given his final ruling.
However, Ejiofor stood up and tabled a good explanation on how the regional court works and why it should remain strong to stand firm for justice which they have been known for years. He also narrated to the ECOWAS court how the Nigerian government refused to release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally as against the judicial rulings of previous judge, adding that this shows a clear disobedience to the rule of law.
The court after listening to both parties adumbration, proceeded to ad5ourn the case to 9th of february, 2017.

Oyo slashes appointees salaries, okays N28bn for roads

The Oyo State Government on Monday said it had reduced the salaries and arrears of its political appointees by 50 per cent following the continued drop in the state revenue.

The government also announced the award of N28bn contracts for the dualisation of four major roads in the state, saying the funds would be sourced from the Federal Government Road Intervention Fund.

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Olalekan Ali, who spoke during an inter-ministerial press briefing on Monday, said  the decisions were made at the last Executive Council meeting in the state.

Ali told journalists that all government spending would be reduced by 50 per cent with immediate effect.

He said the state government had succeeded in blocking all tax holes while the physical verification embarked upon recently had exposed many areas where some individuals were drawing multiple salaries with some getting salaries without working for the government.

Ali explained that about 500 people indicted during the verification did not appear to clear their names at the special panel set up to attend to the problem, adding that others who were cleared by the panel had collected their arrears of salaries till April, 2016.

Alli also assured the people of the state that the state government was working hard to ensure food security through the Agric-Oyo programme and the establishment of 10,000 metric tonnes of silos in Oyo town, which, he said, would be replicated in all the three senatorial districts of the state.

The state Commissioner for Works and Transport, Mr. Wasiu Dauda, told journalists that the N28bn would be used for the dualisation of Saki Township Road from Oke-Ogun Polytechnic to Ilesa-Baruba Road,  the construction of  the Idi Ape—Basorun—Akobo—Odogbo Barracks Junction Road, Agodi Gate—Old Ife Road—Adegbayi and Oke Adu—Agodi Gate—Idi Ape— Iwo Road interchange.

Biafra: Buhari using DSS to scuttle Nnamdi Kanu’s trial, IPOB alleges

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of using the Department of State Services (DSS) to scuttle the trial of Nnamdi Kanu.

A statement by Prince Emmanuel said IPOB hadreceived information that Buhari, through the DSS has allegedly succeeded in putting pressure on Justice Binta Nyako who would hear the case, to feign illness and not attend the hearing today.

Emmanuel said it was this same delay tactics that was used in the past pressurise judges to deliver “illegal rulings in favour of the DSS and in the process, pervert the cause of justice.”

IPOB said it wanted to put the world on notice that Justice Nyako was  in danger of being blackmailed by government, which it alleged, had threatened to reopen corruption charges against her husband, Murtala Nyako, former governor of Adamawa State, if she appeared in court today.

“The tactics of intimidating judges handling this case and subversion of justice must be resisted by all men and women of good conscience and indeed the world at large,” the pro-Biafra group said.

It claimed that Justice Nyako was sighted on Friday last week in good health, stressing that if she failed to turn up to preside over the hearing of the case today, the world should know that  Buhari has allegedly succeeded through the DSS in intimidating the judge as in previous cases.

DPO stabbed as hoodlums attack police headquarters in Anambra

About 16 hoodlums armed with machetes and other dangerous weapons on Sunday night invaded Ogidi Police Divisional Headquarters in Idemili North Local Government Area, Anambra State, injuring the Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Mr Hassan Musa and four other policemen.

Sources said the bandits  who tied white bands on their heads stormed the station at about 9pm as they beat the armed policemen at the gate before forcing their way into the  station  from where they made straight to the counter where the DPO was attending to official matters.

They hit the DPO severally on the shoulder and hands together with four other policemen, causing them serious injuries.

Luck, however, ran out on one of the assailants as he was shot on the leg when they were escaping. He was arrested by the police.

The DPO is receiving treatment at a hospital in Ogidi.

The identities of the attackers and their motives have not been established though there were indications that the suspect said in a confessional statement that they were members of a splinter group of a newly-formed Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), from Asaba,  Delta State capital.  He said they came to steal weapons from the Amoury.

The state Commissioner of Police, Sam Okaula, described the incident as unfortunate noting that a few criminals cannot undermine the relentless efforts of the command to maintain a near crime-free Anambra.

He said the police overpowered the gang, while investigations will determine whether the attackers were cultists. He advised residents not to panic, assuring that the command is on top of the situation

Reacting to the incident, the former provost of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Idemili branch, Pat Agbata, said the attack was barbaric and a deliberate act to harm the innocent DPO and his men.

I was toppled by corrupt officers in 1985 –Buhari

Opening up on how he was toppled in a palace coup in August 1985, President Muhammadu Buhari said he was removed by some corrupt, senior military officers.”

Buhari became Nigeria’s head of state, through a coup, on December 31, 1983.

Former military president, Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, a retired general and former military president, Aliyu Gusau, former director of military intelligence (DMI), and other members of the then ruling Supreme Military Council (SMC) took over power on August 27, 1985.

After his overthrow, Buhari was put under house arrest for so many months until his release in 1988, after the death of his mother.

In a chat with The Interview, Buhari said he was overthrown because of his crusade against corruption in the military.

He said senior military leaders ousted him to save themselves from his wrath.

The president revisited the issue on a two-day working visit to Edo State, yesterday.

Buhari said many had forgotten that he spent most part of his 40 months detention in the ancient city.

“Not many people may remember: I spent most of the 40 months of my detention, following the 1985 coup, in a small bungalow here in Benin,” he said.

Yesterday, after inaugurating a remodeled 200-bed capacity ultra modern central hospital, which the administration of Governor Adams Oshiomhole, the outgoing governor, built in Benin, Buhari said he was impressed with the edifice.

The president also noted that it was “the best way to do things and the best thing to do for the people” by any government.

He also inaugurated the Upper Siluko Road in the state capital and said “the road will stand the test of time.

“Oshiomhole could have built a new Government House but, he chose to construct roads for his people.”

Buhari said he was in the state for the third time to inaugurate projects build by Oshiomhole’s administration.

Boko Haram: Another soldier killed near Lake Chad

From Molly Kilete, Abuja

The bid by the military to rout the remnant of the “technically decimated” Boko Haram insurgent in Borno State, at the weekend claimed the life of another soldier.
This was confirmed in a statement by the army spokesman, Col. Sani Usman, yesterday. The death of the soldier whose identity was not revealed came barely 24 hours after the Commanding Officer, 272 Task Force Tank Battalion, Lieutenant-Colonel Muhammad Abu-Ali, was killed in Borno.
However, in the weekend encounter, troops of the 7 Division Nigerian Army, Operation Lafiya Dole, rescued 85 people, comprising mostly women and children held hostage by insurgents in Borno north, bordering southern fringes of the Lake Chad.
Col. Usman said the hostages were rescued when the troops conducted “a decisive clearance operation” into the remnants of Boko Haram strategic town of Chukungudu.
Usman said the operation was led by the General Officer Commanding, of the 7 Division, Brig-Gen. Victor Ezugwu, between Friday and Saturday.
“The maneuvering Brigade led by 3 Battalion of  22 Brigade, successfully cleared Geram, Bulankassa and Chukungudu believed to be  the Boko Haram terrorists strongholds in that area,” Usman said.
He said the troops killed five terrorists, recovered  four rounds of Rocket Propelled Grenade bombs, one Double Barrel Gun, 349  packets containing various rounds of ammunitions, three magazines, a link belt of machine gun ammunition and one AK-47 rifle magazine.
The troops also discovered an Improvised Explosive Device making factory at Geram.
“In the factory, they found several already primed suicide bombers’ vests, a well equipped motor vehicles and motorcycles’ workshop and spare parts warehouse at Chukungudu village.
“The troops recovered three vehicles and several newly acquired motorcycles.”
He said that in line with rules of  engagement, the IEDs factory, vehicles and motorcycles had been destroyed.
Meanwhile, the army is set to investigate the death of Lt-Col. Abu-Ali.
The death of the officer, Daily Sun gathered, has rattled the top echelon of the service who believe that some persons within the army may have given the enemies details of how a group of soldiers belonging to the Special Forces trained in Belarus,  were moved from Mallam Fatori to Maiduguri, on the day of the attack.
A top army source said investigation into the matter has already commenced and some personnel were beginning to tell the authorities what they know.
The source alleged that the issue of Fifth Communist who provided terrorists with intelligence from the military side had been a sore problem.
Sources said Malam Fatori could best be described as the heat of the battle at the moment as the terrorists attack soldiers location almost on a daily basis.
It gave a vivid description of what happened on the day of the incident.
“There was a signal that 50 soldiers of our special forces be withdrawn from Malam Fatomari to Maidiguri for special operations at Sambisa forest. Although we were not happy when we received the signal given the nature of the security situation and the role these special forces soldiers are playing, the soldiers had to comply with the order. Apart from that, one of the senior officer who came to ensure that the troops withdrew from the area was not looking too relaxed when he came as he was in such a hurry that he even left without his soldiers, which is very unusual.”
Top military Sources said with the killing of Abu-Ali, it was now evident that indeed some persons who are benefitting from the counter insurgency war do not want it to end.
With the death of lieutenant colonel Abu-Ali, the source said the army was left with no other choice but to look into the issue of fifth communist working against the success of the counter insurgency operations.

Corruption: No evidence to try ministers, aides –Presidency

From Laide Raheem, Abeokuta

President Muhammadu Buhari’s spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, has opened up on reasons why members of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress (APC) and appointees of his boss have not been tried for alleged corruption.
Adesina said this on a radio programme, The Podium, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, at the weekend. He  also explained that the October 7-8 raid by the Department of State Services (DSS) on the residences of some judges was not a declaration of war on the Judiciary.
He, however, insisted the raids were efforts to rid the country of corruption.
Adesina also explained that APC  members and appointees were not being prosecuted for corruption because of “lack of evidence” and added that anybody indicted of corruption “will face prosecution, irrespective of his or her political party.”
The presidential spokesman further pointed out that the fact that a  member of opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) crosses over to APC does not provide automatic shield and maintained that, “whoever is indicted will be prosecuted.”
Adesina also decried propaganda of ban on rice importation.
“Ban on rice importation via land borders was placed so as to curtail smuggling and ensure revenue generation from rice importation. Importation of rice via our sea borders remains legal.”
Adesina noted that the Buhari-led Federal Government is serious about diversification of the economy.
“We have got to the point in which we have to diversify or die.
“Government has disbursed money so as to heavily invest in agriculture and mining.”
On the raid on some judges by the DSS, the Special Adviser remarked that “it was only a raid on corruption and not the Judiciary.
“Mr. President has said it all. No one is out to intimidate the Judiciary. The DSS raid was a raid on corruption and not the Judiciary,” he insisted.
A day earlier, the president promised  that  his administration will rescue all persons abducted by Boko Haram.
Buhari said this against the backdrop of the release of Maryam Ali Maiyanga, one of the abducted Chibok girls on April 14, 2014, by Boko Haram.
Maryam was  rescued with her 10-month-old son and released to Borno State Government, after they were rescued in Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area. In series of tweets, at the weekend, Buhari praised efforts of the Nigerian Army in rescuing Maryam, one of the 219 girls abcuted two years ago.
On his Twitter handle, president Buhari commended the troops for their “gallant efforts to secure the people and territory of Nigeria” and described them as the nation’s heroes.
“I commend our troops who continue to work gallantly to secure the people and territory of Nigeria. You are our heroes.
“No man, woman, or child will be left at the mercy of Boko Haram. This has always been our promise and we fully intend to keep it,’’ he said.
Major General and Commander of the 7 Division of army in Maiduguri, Lucky Irabor announced Maryam’s release in Maiduguri, at the weekend.
The Federal Government had, last month, negotiated the release of 21 other girls while another, Amina, escaped from insurgents’ captivity with her baby, earlier.
Unlike Maryam, Amina escaped from Boko Haram with her husband, Mohammed.

My ₦814,500 Covenant University School Fees Was Approved By God, Anyone Who Criticises Me Will Incur The Wrath Of God – David Oyedepo

The Bishop of the Living Faith Church worldwide, has appealed to those criticising the school fees charged by Covenant University to desist to avoid incurring the wrath of God. He said the critics were acting in ignorance and risked incurring the wrath of God.
He said one of such critic smitten with a strange plague of chronic mouth odour over the act only received spiritual pardon following his confession and “my intervention before he was restored to dignity.”
Oyedepo said the issue of school fees paid by students of the university was a godly agenda to meet the demands of raising godly children in an environment conducive for learning.
He said such criticisms were products of ignorance as what students pay could not be compared with what obtained elsewhere that lacked facilities. “The school fees has Gods approval and is in accordance with the quality of facilities provided by the university in meeting the educational needs of the nation,” he said.

JAMB adopts ‘pin vending’ for 2017 UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board says it will adopt “pin vending”  for the 2017 UTME test, advising intending candidates to get familiar with the new approach.

The board’s Head of Media and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos that it would no longer use scratch card.

He said, “Candidates, wishing to sit for the 2017 UTME, should start getting themselves familiar with the newly adopted process of pin vending by the board. We must make ourselves open to change like it is obtained in other climes.

“We are no longer going back to the use of scratch card; that method is outdated. Candidates wishing to register for the examination will just make online payment and get a pin with which they can upload their data.

“This new pin vending will be accessible through the options of web payment, ATM issued cards like Visa, Verve, and Mastercard, online Quick Teller, mobile application and Bank Branch case/card.’’

Benjamin assured Nigerians that the board was working hard to address all the challenges experienced by candidates during its 2016 UTME as it was preparing for the 2017 diet.

He said that all hands were on deck to ensure a hitch-free examination across the country.

“Preparations are on to ensure that all the technical hitches that manifested in the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination do not arise again. That is not to say that the examination will be completely hitch-free.

“But we are deploying resources to correct the ones identified already. In the course of the examination, should there be any other new challenges, we will act promptly,” Benjamin added.

The spokesman also said that the board would begin validation of UTME centres across the country soon.

“We shall be going round to the proposed centres to check the state of their facilities and also to ensure that such facilities could accommodate a minimum of 250 candidates,’’ he said.

Mark Zuckerberg's Fortune Drops $3.7 Billion In 2 Hours, Despite Facebook's Strong Third Quarter

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg shed $3.7 billion from his net worth in the two hours after the market closed on Wednesday, as the company’s stock price sank despite strong third-quarter results.
Zuckerberg’s fortune fell to $50.6 billion as of 6 p.m. Eastern time, according to FORBES estimates. He’s still the fifth-richest person in the world, according to FORBES, right behind Warren Buffett at number 4 and ahead of Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim Helu at number 6. When markets closed on Wednesday, Zuckerberg’s net worth was $54.4 billion.
This year’s previous two earnings reports were a boon for Zuckerberg’s pocketbook. After the company announced second-quarter results in July, a stock surge added $3.4 billion to his net worth in the hour after markets closed. In April, when first-quarter results were announced, he gained $4.2 billion within two-and-a-half hours after markets closed.
But today Facebook’s stock price dipped by around 7% in after-hours trading to $118.36, as of 6 p.m. The drop came despite the company reporting $7 billion in quarterly revenues, up 56% from the same period a year earlier. That beat expectations of analysts polled by Yahoo Finance, who on average expected a 44% increase to $6.9 billion in revenues for the quarter. Net income for the quarter hit $2.4 billion, a 166% increase from last year.
But investors were nonetheless disappointed. Facebook has beat revenue and earnings expectations for six quarters straight. But during the earnings call the company said its expenses will increase in 2017.
As in previous quarters, mobile advertising sales fueled the company’s strong performance. About 84% of the company’s advertising revenues came from mobile, up from 78% during the same period last year. Facebook has also continued to attract new users, despite competition from rivals like Snapchat. Facebook reached 1.79 billion monthly users this quarter, up 16% from a year ago, with the vast majority logging on through mobile devices.
Facebook shares closed at $127.26 on Wednesday, up about 22% since the beginning of the year, but down 1.7% since Tuesday’s closing price.

Nigerians hail Senate over $29.96 loan rejection

By Willy Eya, Taiwo Amodu and Chinelo Obogo

Nigerians reviewed Senate’s rejection of President Muhammad Buhari’s request for  $29.96 billion loan and declared it was in order.
The consensus of opinion was that the presidentshould have consulted with and carried along the National Assembly leadership and intimated them of plans to borrow such huge funds for infrastructural development, among others, before sending a formal request to the lawmakers for consideration.
But, some said the president got what he deserved as he was allegedly aloof and did not do his homework well before sending in the foreign loan request.
Yesterday, at plenary, Senators threw out the president’s request to borrow almost $30 billion because no breakdown of how the money would be utilised was attached to the request.
In the correspondence to the Senate, the president only enumerated how a part of the loan was needed to arrest polio resurgence in the country but lawmakers were not impressed.
They threw out the request without a debate.
Former lawmaker and commissioner, Tanko Yakassai said Senate only acted within its mandate in rejecting Buhari’s request.
He also explained how such weighty request was done in time past.   “It is within the power of the Senate either to approve or reject a request; the only thing we need to know is their reason for rejecting.
“As a former commissioner for Finance, and a former officer in the National Assembly, my opinion is that if government wants to borrow money, the usual thing is to invite the leaders of both chambers, the leaders of the party in power, and also, the opposition and brief them in detail what government will do with the money. They would also be given an idea how government intends to repay the money because there is no use borrowing money to invest in something that would not generate revenue, while you would leave the burden for the future generation. These are important pieces of information that you are required to give to the legislators.
“Unfortunately, sentiments have played a role in the relationship between the executive and the legislature. At the beginning, when there were issues as to who should be presiding officers of the Senate, I think some people in the executive and even the ruling party, did not behave with the future on their minds. They did not foresee the necessity of a cordial relationship between the executive and the legislature because none can succeed without the other.”
Yakassai also explained how the president could turn the situation around.
“It is not too late and he still has the right to make the request again. What the president needs to do is to invite principal officers of the National Assembly or direct Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and appropriate ministers, including Ministers for Finance and that of Budget and National Planning, to have a session with the Senate. It is through that that the legislators would be informed of government intentions…”
But Dr. Junaid Muhammed differed.
He said the president “must come down from his high horse” if he wants a favourable result from the National Assembly.
He said the decision of the Red Chamber must have been informed by the failure of the executive arm of government to convince the legislature on the essence of the loan just as he declared that foreign loan was not the solution to the present economic challenge facing the country. “I don’t know the reasons they gave but a loan of that magnitude is like a Treaty and the president on his own cannot pass a Treaty; the National Assembly must be carried along.
“What is happening now is like Deja vu— something happening again. I remember in 1982, President Shehu Shagari wanted  a loan and a joint session of the National Assembly then insisted it must be tied to specific projects.
“The solution to the recession isn’t borrowing. President Buhari must tell us what he wants to use the loan for and the National Assembly must be adequately informed. He must be able to convince them.
“The issue here isn’t politics since the All Progressives Congress is in the majority in the Senate. Of course, if he cannot tell them, they have the right to reject his loan proposal.
“No head of government has the right to borrow money and expect them to rubberstamp it. It is not done! This isn’t a military government and I won’t support  a president that behaves as if this is a military  government.’’
In his own reaction, former chairman of the Senate Committee on Privatisation Ayo Arise, expressed concern over the stance of the lawmakers.
He, however, submitted that the position taken by the Senate must have been informed by failure of the Presidency to convince them, sufficiently, on the imperative of the loan.
“I was a little bit taken aback. I do not know their reasons, but, I think  the Federal Government hasn’t convinced them sufficiently.
“If government says they want to use it to build roads and infrastructure, there wouldn’t have been basis for non-approval.
“Today, there is no electricity,  federal roads are in bad shape and everybody is suffering. So, I don’t see any reason why they should not approve, but, they reserve the right to take that decision. Maybe government didn’t enumerate the projects they want to use the projects for. If they have done that, I don’t think the lawmakers would be standing on any high moral ground to reject it.’’
Former governor of Anambra State, Chukwuemeka Ezeife applauded Senate’s decision to reject the loan request.
“Buhari swore to a Constitution with provisions for federal character. What it means is that things, including funds, infrastructure etc, should be shared fairly and equitably among the geopolitical zones.
“There is no worse corruption than the president sharing things with nepotism and ethnic sentiments. So, for the first time, we should clap for the Senate. People in Nigeria should begin to wake up.”
Regardless, to Rights Activist and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Femi Falana, the Federal Government should take the rejection in good faith and focus more on recovery of looted funds.
He also pleaded with government not to plunge Nigeria into toxic debt with the fresh foreign loan.
“The federal government should take the rejection as a challenge to review recovery of looted wealth of the nation and the criminal diversion of billions of dollars from the Federation Account. A few months ago, I  urged the Finance Minister, Kemi Adeosun,  to embark on an aggressive recovery policy. Apart from acknowledging the letter and assuring me that the letter was receiving attention no measure has been put in place to recover the looted wealth of the nation. In frustration, I was compelled to submit a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to recover the fund and prosecute indicted individuals and corporate organisations.
“Following the submission of the petition, a former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria demanded apology from me for saying that he gave out a loan of $7 billion to 14 banks, sometime in 2006. Since he admitted that the money was a “deposit” and not a loan, I rejected his demand for apology. Moreso that the $7 billion and the bailout of  $4 billion given to the same banks in 2008 have  not been refunded. Curiously, the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria has not demanded repayment of the said sum of $11 billion from the banks.
“I have also just confirmed that one of telecommunication companies operating in the country recently engaged in money laundering and successfully but illegally  transferred over $25 billion out of Nigeria. Since the Money Laundering Act of 2011, as amended,  requires that the entire proceed of the crime be forfeited to the  federal government, it is hoped that the highly-placed public individuals involved in the criminal enterprise will not compromise the interests of the nation this time around!
“If official efforts are intensified  to recover the billions of dollars which have been looted or diverted from the Federation Account by economic saboteurs, the federal government does not need to plunge the nation into another  toxic debt.”
