Biafra: Kanu regains freedom
After almost two years in detention, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, yesterday breathed the air of freedom as he was released from Kuje prison, Abuja.
He was brought from Kuje prison to the Federal High Court at 6:30pm in a black Mercedes GL 550 4Matic Jeep with registration number ABC 46 MUL to sign the necessary bail papers.
The process, which took barely 10 minutes saw Kanu emerging with smiles from the court in company with his sureties and his relatives.
After a group photographs with his relatives and well wishers at the court complex, Kanu declined to grant any interview in line with the conditions attached to his bail.
The way to freedom began early morning and progressed till about 3:44pm, when his lawyer, Mr. Ifeanyi Ejiofor, accompanied by Kanu ‘s younger brother, Prince Kanu, former Aviation Minister, Chief Chidoka Osita and other relations, left the Federal High Court complex together with an official of the Nigerian Prison Service (NPS), Inspector Idris M.S for Kuje prison to effect his release.
This was after meeting the conditions attached to his bail by Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja division of the Federal High Court.
Those who stood as sureties for the pro-Biafra agitator were the Chairman, South East Senate caucus and former Deputy Governor of Abia State, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, a Jewish High Chief Priest, Immanuu-El Shalom and a Chartered Accountant residing in Abuja, Tochukwu Uchendu.
After two years in detention, Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja division of the Federal High Court, had on Tuesday April 25, 2017, granted Kanu bail on health grounds.
Kanu and three other pro- Biafra agitators; Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi are standing trial for charges bordering on treasonable felony.
In her ruling, Justice Nyako said he must produce three sureties, including a “highly respected and recognised jewish leader”.
Besides the production of a Jewish leader, the court also asked Kanu to produce a “highly placed person of Igbo extraction such as a Senator”, as well as “a highly respected person who is resident and owns landed property in Abuja”. Justice Nyako ruled that each of the sureties are to deposit N100million each.
In addition to the above bail conditions, Kanu was barred from attending any rally or granting any form of interview.
“I must stress it here that the defendant must not attend any rally. He must not be in a crowd exceeding 10 persons”, the Judge warned.
The court equally held that Kanu who has been in detention since October 14, 2015, when he was arrested by security operatives upon his arrival in Nigeria from the United Kingdom, must sign an undertaking to make himself available for trial at all times.
Kanu was further ordered to surrender his Nigerian and British international passports, even as the court compelled FG to return to him, his wedding ring and reading glasses.
According to the judge, “Count one of the charge upon which the defendants are standing trial is a count alleging treasonable felony; that is even a more serious charge.
“However, as it relates to the 1st defendant (that is Nnamdi Kanu), the applicant has deposed extensively on his health and appeals to the court on health grounds to allow him bail on any condition.”
The court further held that, “overtime that the defendants have appeared in court, the 1st defendant maybe having some health issues as he (Kanu) always sits down and sweats profusely.
“I am of the opinion that the 1st defendant needs a better health attention that the prisons service is unable to provide. I hereby use my discretion and grant the 1st defendant bail.”
Justice Nyako while granting the bail requested for a monthly medical report on Kanu’s health status that must be filed before the court, adding that the 1st defendant shall not grant press interviews nor attend public rallies.
In a related development, the court struck out an application that sought to prevent the federal government from shielding the identities of prosecution witnesses in the suit.
It was a different fate for the three other pro Biafra agitators; Chidiebere Onwudiwe, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, as they were denied bail by the court which fixed July 11 and 12 to commence their trial.
Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State and former Aviation Minister, Mr. Femi Fani-Kayode witnessed the proceedings. Also, the immediate past Aviation Minister, Chief Chidoke Osita was among dignitaries that attended the court proceedings.
Meanwhile, the South East Caucus of the Senate, Thursday met and agreed to take Nnamdi Kanu on bail. The emergency meeting, which held at the Apo Quarters residence of the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, according to reliable sources privy to the meeting, was essentially to discuss the stringent bail conditions granted Kanu by Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday.
“First, the Caucus agreed to work as a team to secure Kanu’s release. It was agreed that the leader of the Caucus and Senator representing Abia South Senatorial District, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe or the Senator representing the IPOB leader’s Abia Central Senatorial District, Senator Theodore Orji, should take him on bail.”
The source said the South East Senate Caucus had also made contact with Nnamdi’s lawyers on the decision to ensure that his bail is perfected.

Why is Buhari hiding his state of health? – Soyinka
President Muhammadu Buhari has been called upon to make his state of health public to Nigerians since the President is a public property.
Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka making the call, Friday,in Lagos asked “Why is the president hiding his state of health? He’s supposed to understand he’s public property, me I’m still private property, that’s why I’m not in Aso Rock,” said Mr. Soyinka, a professor of Comparative Literature.
He further went on to say that “Once you are in Aso Rock, or you occupy a similar position, you have a responsibility to come out frankly to your citizens.
“Guarding your state of health like Donald Trump is guarding his tax returns is not what we expect from a Nigerian president.
“Let him address the nation and stop all these speculations which creates unnecessary political manipulations among other things.”

BREAKING: No fewer than 30 football fans die in Calabar during ManUtd's game against Anderlecht
Tragedy struck yesterday as no fewer than 30 football fans lost their lives at a football viewing centre in Calabar, Cross River state capital, after high tension electricity cable broke from its mooring and fell on the roof of the building.
According to Channels TV, the football fans were said to have assembled at the centre to watch a UEFA Europa League quarter-final match between Manchester United and Anderlecht on satellite television, a game the host won 2-1 (3-2) on aggregate to advance to the semi-final.
A survivor told The Punch that a transformer near the viewing centre located in the Iyang-Esu area of the Calabar Municipal local government area exploded during the match and this caused a high-tension cable to drop on the viewing centre.
The survivor stated amid sobs: “It happened during the match between Manchester United and Anderlecht. I heard a deafening bang. I rushed out to see what was happening. When I turned back to go inside the viewing centre, I saw a cable coming down on the centre and this killed the viewers in the hall.
“It was a horrible sight to behold. I wish I didn’t come out to watch the match. Come to think of it, I have DStv at home but I enjoy watching matches at viewing centres. I could have been dead. I can’t believe that the people I was chatting and joking with a few minutes ago are all gone in a most anguishing way. This world is vain.”
A resident, who preferred anonymity, disclosed that more than eighty persons were in the hall when the cable came down.

Lukaku subscribes to Chelsea, Man U TV to ‘learn how they train’
Wantaway Everton forward Romelu Lukaku has admitted he subscribes to both Chelsea and Manchester United’s in-house TV channels.
The Belgian has scored 24 goals for the Toffees this season but has refused to sign a new contract, citing his desire to play Champions League football.
His former club Chelsea are well on course to be playing in Europe’s elite competition next season, as are Man United, who are favourites to win the Europa League.
Both clubs are reportedly monitoring the 23-year-old despite Everton’s best attempts to scare off potential suitors by slapping a £100million price tag on his head.
And it seems the interest may indeed be mutual after the striker admitted he subscribes to both clubs’ in-house TV channels.
Speaking to Belgian outlet Sport, Lukaku said: “I can never have enough of football. I eat it from the moment I wake up until I go to sleep.
“I’m subscribed to everything you can think of: Chelsea TV, Manchester United TV, Real Madrid TV.
Last time out the Belgian forward scored for the ninth successive home game as the Toffees beat Burnley 3-1 in the Premier League.
In doing so Lukaku became the first person to achieve this feat since club legend Dixie Dean all the way back in 1934.

ASUU calls for JAMB registrar’s resignation
Ibadan—FOLLOWING alleged lopsidedness in the on-going registration of candidates by Joint Admission and Matriculation Board, the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Universities, (ASUU) University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr Deji Omole has called on the Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede to voluntarily resign from office.
The academic union also asked the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu to call the registrar to order to lessen the difficulty being experienced by the candidates.
Dr Omole said the board had outlived its usefulness and the best thing is to scrap it and allow universities design their standard examination for their own candidates.
He noted that the fact that a mock examination was stopped due to logistic reasons underscored the point of alleged incompetence of the Registrar, noting that if candidates could not do mock how sure are they to pass the examination.
He said: “Why will anybody make life difficult for candidates whose parents are struggling to live under the terrible condition the government has made them to live in?”
“Why would somebody introduce changes that are only known by members of the board? We have made case for the scrapping of this body because in the present instance the introduction of different registration procedures has turned candidates to victims of fraud.”while different centres now make business by arranging with private schools who bring all their students in group to come and register while children of the masses look on.”
“This is a failed approach to change and the Registrar admitted this with the cancellation of the mock examination. How can we ensure that the candidates prepare well for the exams when they spend weeks waiting for Personal Identification Number and are at the mercy of registration officers who force them to go to cybercafe where they have arrangements to first create their profile before they can have their PIN”
“This is where people are duping Nigerian children. This is a total failure. Students must have at least three months for registration, its procedure must be open and their options to public universities must not be limited to serve the agenda of the proprietors of private universities”, he argued.

Unknown man pays N42m tithe to a local church in Benue
- A man whose identity has been shielded by a local church in Makurdi, has paid a tithe offering of N42 million
- The money was paid into the UBA account of the NKST Church High level in Makurdi, Benue state
- A copy of the church’s quarterly financial report, covering the months of January – March, confirmed the payment of N42million tithe to the church
A man whose identity has been shielded by a local church in Makurdi, has shocked church members with a tithe offering of N42 million.
Investigations by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Makurdi revealed that the money was paid into the UBA account of the NKST Church High level Makurdi.
Although the resident pastor of the church, Dr. Frederick Ikyaan, initially denied knowledge of such offering, a copy of the church’s quarterly financial report, covering the months of January – March, confirmed the payment of N42million tithe to the church.
The report showed that the lodgement was the highest single offering from an individual for the quarter. The money was paid into the church’s account in January.
The breakdown of the church’s financial report showed an income of N56.2 million and an expenditure of N33.7 million within the same period..
The church’s records also showed that out of the income, N44.6 million was generated from tithe, while a single person accounted for N42 million.
Reacting to the financial report, the pastor said his initial denial was based on the allegations that the donor was an appointee of the Benue State Government.
”I still stand by my words that the person that gave us that money is not an appointee of the state government. In fact, he does not even stay in Benue but is an indigene of the state.”
He said there was nothing wrong with the offering and insisted that the church has nothing to hide.
Meanwhile, the tithe offering has stirred controversy in a state struggling to pay the salaries of workers.
Public discussion centred on the legitimacy of the donors income, as a man who pays N42m to a church as tithe must have made an income of N420 million in the month that he paid.
The NKST Church is an abbreviation for ‘Non go Kristu U Sudan hen Tiv’, meaning the Church of Christ Amongst the Tiv.

Tomato seller claims ownership of N250m cash found in Balogun market
A man who sells tomatoes is claiming ownership of the N250 million found at the Balogun Market, Lagos, on Monday, April 10. |
- A man has reportedly shown up at the Lagos office of EFCC claiming ownership of the N250 million found at the Balogun market, Lagos, on Monday, April 10
- The man is claiming the money is proceeds of his trade in the tomatoes business
- EFCC gave the breakdown of the money was given to include: €547,730, £21,090 and N5,648,500
Following the controversies rocking the nation over huge amount of cash recovered by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), a man has reportedly shown up at the Lagos office of anti-graft agency claiming ownership of the N250 million found at the Balogun Market, Lagos, on Monday, April 10.
It was gathered that an EFCC source who did not want to be named informed Tribune that “a man came on Wednesday claiming the money belonged to him and that it was the proceeds of his trade in tomatoes.”
“We asked him what business fetched him the money, the man said he deals in bringing tomatoes from the North to sell in Lagos. We asked him why he did not put the money in bank, he said he does not use banks. Meanwhile the money is in bales with bank wrappers bearing stamps dated as recent as 6th April, 2017.
“The man was arrested, his statement taken but has been given an administrative bail as investigations continue,”
The source also said that the money had been deposited with the Central Bank.
As at the time of this report EFCC spokesperson in Lagos, Sammin Amadin, was yet to make a statement.
According to an earlier report by
The anti-graft agency got a tip off from a whistle-blower who led operatives to intercept huge sums of money in various currencies at the popular Balogun market in Lagos.
The monies include €547,730 and £21,090 as well as N5,648,500. The total haul is about N250m at the prevailing exchange rate at the parallel market.
The interception followed information that about N250 million cash was being moved somewhere in the market for conversion into foreign currencies by unnamed persons.

Easing UTME registration
The ongoing registration of prospective candidates for the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has been trailed by logistic challenges. The exercise, which commenced on March 20, was to end on Wednesday, April 19, before the strident protests of candidates who were finding it difficult to register and the prompt intervention of the House of Representatives forced JAMB to grant a two-week extension.
Since the sale of forms started, complaints from candidates across the country show that the process of registration is too slow and cumbersome. Some of the candidates in Asaba, Delta State, said it takes about three days to register an applicant. They also complained of difficulty in accessing JAMB’s website. There have also been the same complaints by prospective candidates in Benin City and Cross River State.
The story of slow registration is the same in Lagos, Makurdi and other cities in the country. There are also allegations of extortion of money from candidates by officials charged with the registration as a result of the large crowd of applicants. Computer Based Test (CBT) centre administrators, who reported difficulties in accessing the JAMB website, had also joined in the call by JAMB to extend the registration time.
We welcome the decision of the examination body to extend the exercise by two weeks. The anxiety that had already started building up when the organisation initially refused to extend the registration period has now been largely dispelled. JAMB spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, had, at the time said that the examination body would only work towards rectifying identified lapses in the optimism that, before the end of the initial April 19 deadline, all the prospective candidates would have registered. JAMB had also then said that it had registered 600,000 candidates since the sale of forms commenced on March 20.
We commend the House of Representatives for stepping into the matter, ordering an extension and mandating its Committee on Tertiary Education and Services to oversee the implementation of its directives. It also enjoined JAMB to deploy safety equipment at each centre to forestall stampedes which may arise due to overcrowding during the examination. The House also directed the examination body to specify measures which will qualify any centre to participate in the UTME Computer Based Test. Now that the UTME deadline has been extended, we urge all prospective candidates to strive to register for the examination within the new deadline.
We call on JAMB to use the period of extension to address all the hiccups in the registration exercise. The organisation should fine-tune its Information Technology (IT) systems as well as the registration processes so that candidates can register without further hitches.
It has become necessary to simplify UTME registration. Registration for public examinations should not be such an arduous task. The fact that some candidates claimed that last year’s registration was better than the one of this year, shows that JAMB has a lot of work to do to ease the exercise.
Registration for examinations should not be a harrowing experience as we have it now. Let JAMB fine-tune its processes and ensure a seamless and stress-free registration. Prospective candidates should not be subjected to unnecessary bureaucratic bottlenecks because they want to register for the UTME.

NO ONE CAN stop Biafra–Ikedife
Former President General of Ohanaeze, Dr. Dozie Ikedife has said that no one including the British Government can stop the actualisation of the Republic of Biafra.
Dr. Ikedife was reacting to the statement made by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright last week, that the British Government stands for one and indivisible Nigeria, and will not watch to see Nigeria divided.
In an interview with VINCENT KALU, the former boss of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, said the position of the British will heighten the actualization of Biafra, instead of deterring it.
According to him, Britain had watched and encouraged the break up of many countries, and wondered why it should take a different stand on Nigeria, just to protect of its economic interest.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Paul Arkwright last week said that the British government stands for one and indivisible Nigeria, and will not watch to see Nigeria divided. What is your view vis-a-vis the activities of MASSOB and IPOB, agitating for Biafra?
Such a statement or position is not a surprise because when people from the Southeast were being killed in some parts of Nigeria, and were virtually pushed out of Nigeria, and when they declared Republic of Biafra, as their own and home, the British government helped to suppress that by supporting Nigeria along with one or two European countries.
Those were the days, and things have changed.
Granting that the United Kingdom is reputed to be a conservative country, they have on their own demonstrated acceptance of changes.
For example, they allowed Scotland to do a referendum on whether they will continue to stay in the United Kingdom or not, even more significantly, they were standing by and encouraging the break up of former Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR); they were standing by to see the break up of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia and Sudan. These countries went their various ways.
They were standing by when the sub continent of India gave birth to Pakistan and Bangladesh.
Even more recently, they decided to pull out of European Union.
When such a statement comes from somebody representing Her Majesty in Government, one wonders whether he was speaking for himself, expressing his personal opinion or expressing the opinion of Her Majesty in Government.
United Kingdom is also a member of United Nations Organisation, which has enacted and emphasised the rights of ethnic nationalities for self-determination; now this man speaking probably represents 18th Century view, and not the 21st Century view, where Scotland is also preparing another referendum to pull out of Great Britain and remain with European Union.
Nigeria remains the last experiment of the British, all other federations that they tried putting together have all broken down. Example, Federation of East Africa dissolved into Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania. They created the West Indies Federation, which also failed and you now have Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago; they created Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, it failed. The only federation they created then that has not failed is Nigeria, do you think they will ever allow this to go?
Britain will of course like to see Nigeria remain together so that the areas they are exploiting either by buying or selling will remain like that, undisturbed.
They are speaking from the point of view of their own economic interest, and not with any altruistic point of view. One should not be deterred by such expressions; the Ambassador has the right to express his personal opinion.
Britain wields much influence in the comity of nations, will it not discourage others that would have had sympathy for Biafra agitators?
No, it will only heighten our resolve to achieve what we set out to achieve, knowing that they are people or nations that oppose it for selfish reasons.
How do you go about achieving this?
We are not talking only of referendum, which is one of the ways. The other way, is the legal process, which is going on; Another is diplomatic process, which is also very much on, and also engaging in dialogue, which is also in the process. These are the ways and means of achieving it.
Some say that the position of Britain was to protect the North?
I don’t want to go into that, as I don’t have evidence. It is speculative, and I have covered it by saying that they want to protect their market; their economic interest, especially in the oil and gas, and so, they don’t know how Biafra will react with regards to their oil, if the Eastern Region or most of it is declared Republic of Biafra.
Let me say that the people of Biafra will not be hostile to anybody; or deny anybody trading opportunity. They should not be afraid of hostility in any form, and that is where their fears are hinged on.
Based on the Amnesty International report on how the Nigerian Army killed over 100 unarmed Biafra agitators, the Chief of Army Staff set up a panel to look into it, what is your view on this?
Anybody can set up any committee he wants, and he can skew the committee membership to give him the results he wants.
Such an investigation should be by an independent neutral body, what you call independent arbitrator or assessor, which is not set up by one side alone.
If it should be set up, membership must be made up of nominations from the two sides, and they will find neutral people and inject into it, and whatever they produce will suffer less bias.
Before, you were the lone voice talking about the release of Kanu, but recently, other prominent Igbo, Igbo groups and even governors have joined the fray, asking for Kanu’s release, what does this mean?
It means that they are now seeing what we saw many months ago, and it is gratifying.
I’m glad more people are seeing what we saw, which means they are buying into the project.

IPOB raises alarm over alleged plot to assassinate Nnamdi Kanu
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) yesterday warned against what it called incessant assassination attempts on the life of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu who is detained at the Kuje Prison, Abuja.
IPOB is alleging that the latest attempt took place on Thursday while Kalu and his colleagues were being taken to the court but failed because according to the group, “Kanu is a prophet of our time and very popular to mankind around the globe which no man born of a woman can stop because he is a prophecy of 400 years ago.”
A statement by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, made available to newsmen in Awka yesterday, the group said the Federal Government was changing every rule against Kanu in order to frustrate him.
The statement said that when the Thursday assassination bid failed, a more stringent condition was placed against Kanu in prison custody as a result of which his visitors were turned back.
“Information reaching us this morning (Friday) has it that visitors are no longer allowed to see the IPOB leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his fellow freedom fighters namely Benjamin Madubugwu, Chidiebere Onwudiwe and David Nwawuisi, except they get clearance forms from the Prison Headquarters Abuja.
“The legal and constitutional procedure that every visitor has followed right from the onset is to fill some forms at the Kuje prison gate with a passport photograph and submit to the security at the entrance for verification before the visitor is allowed in.
“This procedure has been applicable to both Nnamdi Kanu and other inmates in Kuje prison. But this new method is totally strange and entirely different and it reeks of some vendetta. We are also aware that the devious Nigerian government is at it again. They have never relented in plotting some vices to get at the IPOB leader, his fellow freedom fighters and Biafra at large.
“The recent being the assassination attempt on Nnamdi Kanu’s life on his way to the court yesterday (Thursday) being the 6th of April which however failed woefully. Now, this new plan has come up, to frustrate visitors who come for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his mates”, the group stated.
IPOB therefore questioned the reason for the new method introduced for Kanu’s visitors and why the order was affecting only their leader’s visitors.
It further said, “There are other inmates in Kuje Prison but why are only Nnamdi Kanu’s visitors always either denied access to see him, harassed and embarrassed, or even malhandled while visitors for other inmates encounter no challenges at all? Why should it be this way? For how long will this injustice and inhumane treatment last?”

Tension as Anambra’s female speaker disappears with mace to escape impeachment
- There was a reported plan by the members of the Anambra state House of Assembly to impeach the speaker
- The situation at the House of Assembly forced Governor Willie Obiano to intervene as he held a meeting with 28 legislators
In a bid to avoid being impeached by her colleague, the speaker of the Anambra state House of Assembly, Mrs Rita Maduagwu, has disappeared with the mace, the symbol of authority in the legislature.
The Punch reports that the speaker escaped with the mace and forced activities in the Assembly to a halt with the about 28 members present not able to go ahead with the business of the day.
It was learnt that she carried out the act without the knowledge of the members of the House.
The situation forced the governor of the state, Chief Willie Obiano, to drive to the House of Assembly complex in an effort to intervene.
The report said the governor also addressed the 28 members of the House who are members of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) and pleaded with them to persuade others not to carry out the impeachment.
“When the bell signifying her coming into the chambers rang several times, the Speaker was nowhere to be found,” the report said adding that this caused the majority leader, Victor Okoye, to call for the adjournment of the sitting till Tuesday, April 11.
The member representing Ekwusigo constituency, Onyebuchi Offor, reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the speaker’s attitude adding: “We came this morning to hold our normal session, only to be disappointed that the Speaker had absconded with the mace.
“I am of the PDP and the governor came and spoke with 28 APGA members of the House.
“I didn’t know the governor’s mission because it was impromptu. But I knew he must have come to preempt our sitting because we had had poor leadership under Rita Maduagwu.
“But I’m assuring you that justice must prevail. No matter where she runs to, we have determined to take a decision on the leadership of this House.
“There is no going back, because we are here to serve Anambra people well.”
Senators to Buhari: You can’t force us to do your biddings
The leadership of the National Assembly has vowed to resist any form of intimidation from the executives, insisting that their interference would distract them from their constitutional obligations.
NASS leadership represented by Senators Solomon Olamilekan, Samuel Anyanwu and Abdufatai Buhari, confirmed their position when they addressed protesters that stormed NASS complex in Abuja yesterday to protest what they termed “government unwarranted efforts to undermine the institution of the legislature.”
The protesters under the aegis of the Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and Constitution, besieged the National Assembly not only to support the legislators over some key decisions it had taken in recent times but to also register their grievances against alleged attempts by the executive arm of government to undermine the legislature.
Led by Mr Ariyo-Dare Atoye, the youths said they were concerned over unfolding development regarding the relationship between the executive and the legislature, adding that the protest was meant to draw the attention of the world to the continued efforts by the executive arm of government to undermine the legislature.
“We are here to inform the world that democracy is under threat in Nigeria. We have seen some very wicked, satanic and devilish attempts to destroy the National Assembly by some people who have obnoxious proposition about the need to scrap the Senate or the National Assembly.
“We are not here to defend an individual senator or the leadership of the Senate, but we to defend the institution and independence of the National Assembly.
“We will not allow the likes of Prof. Itsey Sagay and Femi Falana to misinterpret what the constitution says. These people, when the DSS invaded the residences of our judges, came out to commend the DSS and insisted that the judges invaded should step down.
“But the same DSS report indicted the Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu but the same people started blaming the National Assembly and saying Magu must remain on his seat. Where do we go from here?” he queried.
Meanwhile, the Senators have tasked Nigerians to believe in the legislature, saying it was firmed in its resolve to ensure Nigerians get their fair share of democratic dividends.
“Let me stand on behalf of the leadership of the National Assembly under Senator Bukola Saraki and the Speaker, House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, to thank the people of this country for coming out in their number to reject executive interference in the activities of the legislature.
“We have listened to all that have been said and I want to tell you that there’s no way, and nobody can kill the legislature,” Olamilekan said.
Meanwhile, the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate) Ita Enang, has said Nigerians should be worried if the executive and legislative work and in gloves.
He said for democracy to thrive, disagreement between the two arms of government was inevitable.
He, however, described the relationship between executive and legislative as perfect, cordial, constitutional.
Enang who spoke to State House correspondents said the constant interractions between Senate President, Bukola Saraki and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, was a confirmation of the cordial relations between both arms.
Senate had last month suspended for two weeks, the consideration of 27 Resident Electoral Commissioner nominees (for the Independent National Electoral Commission), forwarded to it for confirmation by the President, until the Acting Chairman, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu, was sacked.
The Senate rejected Magu’s nomination following a “security report” before it.
The Senate had also requested Buhari to sack the Secretary to the Government of Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal over alleged N200 million contract scam in the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp involving a firm in which he is believed to have links.
The Senate had also threatened to sack the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Hameed Ali, if he failed to obey its order on the suspension of the policy on the collection of duties on old vehicles and also appear before the Red Chambers in uniform.
The presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC) chairman, Itse Sagay, has also been at loggerheads with the Senate, as he said the upper chamber lacked the authority to summon him for expressing an opinion.
According to Enang, even though there appeared to be tension sometimes between the two arms, like the screening of the ministerial and ambassadorial nominees, leading to some of them being dropped, it did not in anyway mean the executive and the legislature were at loggerheads.
He noted that the duty of the legislature was to screen nominees and their rejection of one or two was a demonstration of their being thorough on the job.
Enang said, “I am here to confirm to you that the relationship between the Executive and the Legislature is very cordial, constitutional, and in all manners, usual.”

IPOB: Court fixes April 25 to rule on secret trial
Justice Binta Nyako has fixed April 25 to deliver ruling in the application of leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, seeking a variation of the order of court on protection of witnesses in his trial.
Kanu, in the said application asked the court to set aside the order made on December 13, 2016 for the protection of witnesses.
Lead defence counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor with Inalegwu Adoga, E.I Esene and Chukwuma Ozougwu argued that having been acquitted of the charges of terrorism and importation of weapons, the defendant cannot be tried with the identities of witnesses based on section 36(6) of the 1999 Constitution.
But counsel to the Federal Government, Suleiman Labaran urged the court to dismiss the application as it was a ploy to delay the trial.
Also, former Anambra State governor, Peter Obi has called on the Federal Government to embrace dialogue and consultations as the only way to quell the agitations in the country including agitating for the independent state of Biafra.
This was just as he said leaders of the South East, regardless of their political affiliations must work together and to speak with one voice in order to confront the perceived marginalization of the zone.
Obi who stated this yesterday in Government House, Owerri after a closed-door meeting with Governor Rochas Okorocha pointed out that in any democratic dispensation, the only way to quell agitations and disaffection in the system was through dialogue and consultations. Meanwhile, IPOB has commended elders, monarchs, women, youths, businessmen and other well meaning Biafrans who stormed the Federal Court, Abuja, yesterday, to show solidarity for its leader.
The group noted that the gesture touched on the ethos of IPOB which shows brotherhood (onuru ube nwanne agbala oso) as well as love, determination and dedication the people have towards its leader and others standing trial with him.
This is even as General Overseer of Mount Zion Faith Global Liberation Ministries, Bishop Udeh Abraham Chris urged South East governors requesting the release of the leader of IPOB, Kanu, to also ask the Muhammadu Buhari administration to grant the people in Biafran land their demand for self-determination.

Nigerian lawmakers ask JAMB to extend 2017 UTME registration deadline
The House of Representatives has urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB to extend the one month deadline given to applicants for the 2017 UTME exercise by at least another month to create more space for prospective applicants.
The call was contained in a motion on Tuesday raised by Danburan Nuhu (Kano-APC)
Mr. Nuhu said during the 2016 UTME exercise, about 1.6 million applicants registered out of which about one million passed while the 2017 exercise might reach 2million across the country given the growing number of applicants.
“Some of the approved centres are registering 250 applicants at a time and most of them are not spacious, do not have adequate number of computers,” he said.
He urged the examination body to specify the requirements including safety measures, which qualify any centre to participate in the conduct of UTME Computer Based Test.
He also urged JAMB to deploy safety equipment to each centre to forestall any incidence of stampede due to overcrowding.
The motion was unanimously adopted by the House and the committee on basic education was mandated to direct JAMB to comply with the resolutions.
The JAMB has repeatedly said it has no plans of extending the April 19 registration deadline for the UTME.
On Monday, the agency said it had registered about 600,000 applicants already.

If we break Nigeria into components, Northern Nigeria will be the poorest – Sanusi
Muhammadu Sanusi II, Emir of Kano, in his key note address during the opening ceremony of Kaduna state's investment programme titled 'Promoting Investment Amidst Economic Challenges' says northern Nigeria will be the poorest if the country is broken into components.
The Emir made the disclosure at the second edition of the Kaduna Investment Forum, Kadinvest 2.0 in the state.
He says the North east and west are the most poorest in the country and even in the world.
The Emir urged the region not to use the oil rich Niger delta, commercially viable Lagos and business oriented south east to mirror the living standard of the North.
Going further, he urged Muslims to imbibe education and stop using religion and culture to set the region backward.
“Other Muslim nations have put forward girl education. Other Muslim countries have pushed on. We are fighting culture, we are fighting civilization. You tell me that you should not write love book in northern Nigerian.
He also says it is wrong to burn books of science based on religion. “What is the crime of those books?” he asks.
Going further, he questioned the right of people in having more children in the region without having the resource to take care of them.
“Of what benefit is it to the north, having 3 million children roaming about?” he asks.

JAMB introduces new process of purchasing PIN
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has said that eligible candidates for its 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, can now purchase the pin for registration using the Remita mode.
The board said yesterday the development came on the heels of the reported challenges the candidates faced in an attempt to acquire the pins from NIPOST and designated banks.
The Head of Information of JAMB, Fabian Benjamin, said the board had noted the many headaches of prospective candidates from various parts of the country, including Lagos, adding that candidates had lamented the difficulties involved in obtaining the pins from designated banks on the payment of N5,500 and the subsequent hassles in getting registered.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the registration of candidates for the examination started on March 20.
It was also reported that the candidates had described the process as cumbersome and frustrating as they had to queue as early as 2 or 3 a.m. in some cases in banks just to acquire pins.
They had also said that often times, they spent the entire day waiting endlessly without results as the bank officials tell them that they could not access the site for the pins.
They also said the development normally forced them to spend almost an entire week trying and that even when they succeeded, they start facing the task of registration at overcrowded centres.
According to Mr. Benjamin, candidates are advised not to panic as every eligible candidate desirous of registering will do so before the closing date of April 19.
“We appreciate the fact that the sales of the UTME for 2017 which is hitherto set to last for six weeks has been reduced to one month.
“This was done in the interest of the candidates as it was to ensure that the challenges candidates are going through are resolved,” he said.
“To further cushion the effect of these challenges, we have decided to bring the Remitta mode on board.
“Candidates can now purchase the pin for registration from the comfort of their homes.
“So, aside the banks and NIPOST, candidates can now purchase the pins through Remita,” Mr. Benjamin said in a statement.
The statement explained why the board banned cyber cafes from registering candidates for the examination, noting that activities in the cafes damaged records and statistics of candidates.
“In as much as we want to be inclusive, we cannot look the other way while students’ records and national statistics are mutilated.
“Ours is an examination, so we cannot be guided by primordial consideration over quality and standard,” it said.
According to the statement, most problems associated with candidates’ registration such as wrong spellings of names, wrongful placement of passport photograph and others emanates from the business centres at registration points.
“Don’t forget, it is virtually impossible to regulate the activities of these business centres as their mode of operations did not provide necessary details about them.
“These problems created by cafes make information gathering, processing and administration of examination cumbersome as records and data of candidates are distorted.
“The accreditation centres are on the board’s website for easy identification cohesion and smooth operation,” it explained.
He added that the board would continue to expand the frontiers and channels of the sales of the pins in virtually all the banks, with a view to bringing the services to the door step of every Nigerian child desirous of qualitative tertiary education.
According to the statement, examination is a serious business and it cannot be left open the way some people want it to be.
“We again urge Nigerians particularly anxious candidates not to fall prey to unsuspecting and dubious individuals who parade themselves as agents of JAMB with the intention to defraud them.
“The board’s e-brochures and syllabus are on the CD to be given out to candidates and it is free and available as a guide to candidates to have a hitch-free registration exercise,” the statement said.
